Teaching Geography, Earth and Environmental Science with Primary Sources
Explore resources from the Library of Congress to extend your students’ understanding of analysis, interpretation, and real-world application of geography, earth and environmental science concepts. Incorporate the Library’s digitized collection into science classes through “Teaching with Primary Sources” strategies, pedagogy, and technology to apply in your in-person or online classroom. Design an activity for teaching science with primary sources. Foster students' critical thinking, problem-solving, and data analysis skills while cultivating environmental awareness and stewardship by connecting sciences to societal issues and sustainability.
The interdisciplinary curriculum will be delivered online with optional synchronous meetings to allow for information sharing, training, and content engagement. Course materials will reference Colorado Academic Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and the North American Association for Environmental Education Guidelines for Excellence. Learning materials will familiarize the participants with the Library’s Teaching with Primary Sources materials including texts, images, videos, and maps. Participants will practice exploring how primary sources can support strategies such as literacy, inquiry-based learning, critical thinking, and construction of knowledge.
Participation in this course is limited to teachers-in-service and students working towards a teaching license.
